What are Veneers?

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that fit over your teeth like a glove, changing the shape, color, and length of your smile. They are durable and stain-resistant, and require little maintenance other than regular brushing and flossing. You can even continue your regular eating and snacking habits without worrying about damaging your veneers. They’re often a great solution for patients who want minor cosmetic changes to their smile, but don’t want to commit to multiple dental treatments.

Veneers Options

Veneers are thin shells of tooth-like porcelain that are bonded to the front side of teeth to improve their appearance. Porcelain is a durable and natural-looking material, and these ultra-thin shells are designed to look like natural teeth.

Veneers are often recommended when patients have minor to moderate imperfections in their smile that they would like to change. If you are unhappy with your smile due to small gaps between your teeth or if you feel that your teeth are too small, you may want to consider getting veneers. A dentist would evaluate your mouth and help you decide if veneers are the best option for you.

Some patients may wonder, “Are veneers permanent?” The answer depends on which type of veneer you get and how well you take care of them. In general, veneers can last anywhere from five to 20 years if you take good care of them and don’t damage them by biting your nails or chewing on ice or other hard foods. On the other hand, porcelain veneers are considered a permanent restoration because of the higher cost of the material. If you choose them over composite resin, you’ll likely need to keep coming back to our office every few years to replace your veneers as they wear down. Talk to your dentist!

Choosing Veneers

Veneers are thin, tooth-shaped porcelain shells that are custom-made for your smile. They are made from impressions of your teeth, so they’ll be perfect in size and color. Once the veneers are made, Dr. Jennifer Nguyen will bond them onto the surface of your tooth to create a beautiful new smile!

The process for getting veneers usually requires two visits, but Dr. Jennifer Nguyen can give you a more accurate timeline during your consultation appointment. During your first appointment, she will prepare your teeth by removing a small amount of enamel to make room for your veneers. Then, you’ll wear temporary veneers until your custom ones are complete. At your second appointment, the temporary veneers will be removed and your final ones will be bonded to your teeth. During your follow-up appointments, we will ensure that your gums are healthy and the placement is correct.
