A dental checkup and cleaning are important aspects of preventative care. It helps your dentist find and treat any dental issues early on, before they progress.

What is a Dental Checkup?

You should visit your dentist regularly for preventive care, including consistent checkups and cleanings. We recommend coming in twice a year for a cleaning and checkup appointment. This helps us catch minor issues before they become major problems. If we find a problem early, the treatment will be less invasive and more affordable.

During your checkup, we will perform an exam to check your teeth and gums for any signs of problems. We will also check for oral cancer, TMJ disorder, and other health issues that can affect your dental health. Cleanings are important because they remove plaque and prevent gum disease. Plaque and tartar buildup can lead to tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease if left untreated for too long.

After we examine your mouth and clean your teeth, we will give you personalized tips for keeping your mouth healthy at home. We may recommend that you change your brushing technique or switch to an electric toothbrush. We may also suggest different toothpastes or rinses that can help prevent decay. You may also receive advice on flossing techniques. It’s important to use the right tools and techniques to keep your gums and teeth healthy!

How often should I get a Dental Cleaning?

While your exact needs may vary, we recommend that patients schedule preventive appointments with their hygienist every six months. At these visits, your hygienist will remove plaque buildup from the surfaces of your teeth and in between teeth using a gentle, non-abrasive procedure known as scaling. Scaling will help prevent and control periodontal disease, which has been linked to a variety of systemic diseases throughout the body. The removal of plaque will also reduce your risk for tooth decay, cavities, and other oral health problems.

During your visit, you can also receive a fluoride treatment to strengthen your tooth enamel and protect your smile from additional damage. Your hygienist will explain your personalized oral hygiene instructions to help you care for your smile at home between hygiene visits.Brushing twice a day for two minutes at a time with a soft-bristled toothbrush, flossing at least once a day before bedtime, rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash daily, and limiting your intake of sugary foods and beverages can all help you maintain a healthier smile.

By scheduling regular preventive care with your dental hygienist, you can effectively prevent many common dental problems and maintain a healthy mouth for life. Contact our office today at (825) 478-888 to schedule your dental checkup and dental cleaning with Dr. Jennifer Nguyen!
