Botox is an FDA-approved injection medication designed to treat facial wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes, nose, mouth, and forehead. It is made from botulinum toxin type A, which temporarily blocks nerve activity in the muscles that cause visible signs of aging to form. It is injected into facial muscles to smooth wrinkles, reduce fine lines, and give you a more youthful appearance. It can also be used to treat migraines, hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), and TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders.

How Does Botox Work?

As the skin ages, certain muscle groups contract and cause skin cells to wrinkle and crease. By stopping the muscle activity that causes these wrinkles, Botox smoothes the skin’s surface and gives it a more youthful appearance. When the qualified practitioner injects Botox into the skin, it typically takes three to seven days to have an effect. Then, the muscles will relax for up to three months before repeating the process again. Patients should see results within one week of treatment and can repeat treatment two to three times a year to maintain their results.

When patients come to their dentist for a Botox treatment, they receive the injections themselves. However, dentists are highly trained injectors who can give treatment quickly and comfortably. In addition, a dentist can also answer any questions the patient might have about the procedure or about his or her oral health in general.

Botox works by blocking the communication between neurotransmitters and muscles, preventing the muscles from contracting. By preventing the contraction of these muscles, the wrinkles on the skin surface are smoothed out.

How Long Do the Results Last?

Botox treatment typically lasts about three to four months when administered regularly. Patients can expect their fine lines and wrinkles to be smoother and less visible during this time period. Also, because Botox prevents muscle contractions, patients may find that they experience temporary muscle weakness in the treated areas. If this occurs, it will likely go away within a few weeks of treatment.

If you stop using Botox properly, you should be able to return to your previous look. However, if you experience any negative side effects or continue to use the product longer than prescribed, you could permanently alter the appearance of your face. This is why it’s important to follow all instructions, including how often you should schedule appointments.
